Town Manager Busted on Crack Cocaine Charges
LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. (AP) _ The manager of this small oceanfront town was told to resign or face getting fired because of his arrest on a charge of smoking crack cocaine in his home.
George Spare, 33, was arrested Monday night and released from jail Tuesday night on $1,000 bond. Earlier Tuesday, city commissioners moved to oust him.
″I think it’s premature to judge him on the charges filed last night, but sufficient evidence exists to ask the town attorney to contact Spare with the possibility of seeking his resignation,″ said Commissioner Ken Wardlaw.
Commissioners said they would proceed with formal charges against Spare if he does not resign.
Spare and two other men were charged with possession of cocaine. The Broward County sheriff’s deputy who arrested them said Spare answered the door to his Fort Lauderdale apartment in the nude and invited him inside. He said all three men were nude and smoking crack cocaine.
Spare was hired in 1988 as the town’s first professionally trained manager.
