Amato, Force, Johnson, Schultz are NHRA leaders
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Joe Amato, John Force, Warren Johnson and Dave Schultz were the leaders after qualifying Friday for the Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
Qualifying for the $1,831,950 NHRA event continues Saturday with two sessions for the professional competitors. Final eliminations are Sunday.
Amato is the Top Fuel leader, covering the quarter-mile distance in a track-record time of 4.652 seconds at 318.80 mph.
Force set the pace in Funny Car with a 5.006 at 399.60.
Johnson set the NHRA national speed record in Pro Stock at 199.91 in his first qualifying pass of the day and backed it up within one percent as required by NHRA rules on his second run. Johnson is the No. 1 qualifier at 6.927, which ties the quickest elapsed time in history. Johnson holds that record, set at the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Calif.
Schultz set the pace in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 7.321 at 182.
