No. 15 New Mexico State 73, San Jose State 67

SAN JOSE Calif. (AP) _ Tracey Ware scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half and 15th-ranked New Mexico State pulled away late for a 73-67 victory over San Jose State in the Big West Saturday night.

After the Spartans rallied from a 12-point deficit to tie the score at 51 with 7:59 to play, New Mexico State (21-3 overall, 13-2 in conference) scored 10 consecutive points, opening a 61-51 lead when Ware made one of two free throws with 3:56 remaining.

On the defensive end during the decisive run, the Aggies forced San Jose State (7-18, 5-11) into a turnover, a 10-second violation, an airball 3-point shot and another turnover.

San Jose State got within 67-60 with 1:09 to play before William Benjamin made a free throw, then stole the ball and made a layup to seal the outcome with 54 seconds left.

New Mexico State has won nine of its last 10 games.

Mike Brotherton scored a season-high 24 points and Mike Wasserburger added 16 points to lead San Jose State, which lost to the Aggies for the eighth consecutive time over the last three seasons.

After New Mexico State scored six unanswered points to take a 45-33 lead, San Jose State roared back with a 15-2 run. The Spartans pulled within 47-46 on a three-point play by Mike Brotherton, and took their first lead of the game at 49-47 on Wasserburger’s 3-pointer with 9:12 to play.

New Mexico State recovered with baskets by Michael New and Benjamin for a 51-49 lead, only to have San Jose State tie the score at 51 on Brotherton’s two free throws with 7:59 left.
