Undocumented immigrant leaves Philly church after 10 months in sanctuary, demands Casey help her family stay in U.S.

An undocumented Mexican woman left the Church of the Advocate on Wednesday morning after nearly 10 months in sanctuary, risking arrest and deportation by openly traveling to the Center City office of U.S. Sen. Bob Casey.

Carmela Apolonio Hernandez, 37, an immigrant mother of four, arrived in the lobby of the senator’s Market Street office about 9 a.m.. She said she would not leave until Casey agreed to help her and her children legally stay in the United States.
