Healthy aging summit slated for this week
The two-day Aging Healthy RGV Summit is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, at the Brownsville Event Center, 1 Event Center Blvd.
The second annual event is free and open to the public. The theme is that aging, besides being inevitable and frustrating, can also be a healthy and positive experience. The first day will serve as a “resource fair” featuring agencies that provide services to older people.
The second day is dubbed the “Educational Communtiy Awareness Conference.” It will feature as keynote speaker Dr. Nelly Garcia Blow, a doctor of osteopathic medicine in Corpus Christi.
Jack White, executive director of the Good Neighbor Settlement House, said Blow “brings a vast amount of hands-on experience working with our aging population.” White will speak about the Texas State Five-Year Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease. The event also cover topics including fraud, emergency preparedness, mental health, recreation therapy and STD/HIV prevention.
The summit will include breakout sessions, and refreshments will be available and vendors on hand. The event is being sponsored by the city of Brownsville, Cameron County Health Department, Healthy Communities of Brownsville and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
