After big wins over Atascocita, Lady Mavs, Longhorns counting days to showdown
It’s shaping up to be a humdinger of a Tour I-closing high school volleyball match.
We’re talking about the impending match between Memorial and Dobie, scheduled for Sept. 21, that will bring the curtain down on the first tour through District 22-6A.
Barring an upset in this final week, both clubs should be coming into that match with identical 5-2 records and in very good position for a Class 6A state playoff berth.
Both clubs are done with the Humble ISD teams until Tour II and for the most part they survived the gauntlet of challenges.
The Lady Mavs went 2-2 against the Humble ISD assignments, closing it out with a tremendous road win at Atascocita High School on Sept. 7.
Should Memorial qualify for the state playoffs, the Lady Mavs will look back on that night’s tension-packed 25-23, 23-25, 30-28, 26-24 triumph as one of the reasons for extending their season.
But Dobie can say the same thing because Tuesday night on the Longhorns court, it also nipped Atascocita in thrilling fashion, winning 25-20, 27-29, 25-18, 26-24.
Based on those two outcomes, it adds fuel to the fire that the Memorial-Dobie match must be circled on the calendar.
The Lady Mavs played three matches on Humble ISD courts and claimed 66 percent of them for this first tour. What it means is that all the Humble ISD opponents, with the exception of Kingwood, will be coming to Memorial High School’s gym for Tour II.
Kingwood, with its 6-0 record, and Summer Creek with its 4-1 ledger lead the large pack, followed by Memorial and Dobie.
Dobie still has two matches remaining before facing Memorial, but the Longhorns will be catching 2-3 Sam Rayburn and 0-5 South Houston.
Memorial’s only assignment before Dobie is a road match at South Houston on Friday. It has the district’s bye date next Tuesday.
