ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Washington scored 15 points to help No. 8 Cincinnati beat SMU 61-51 in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Gary Clark added 12 points and 11 rebounds as Cincinnati rallied from a six-point second-half deficit to move on to the semifinals against the winner of the Tulsa-Memphis game.
UNDATED (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are cutting ties with star cornerback Richard Sherman after seven seasons. The team has informed him that he will be released, and Sherman confirmed the decision in a text message to The Associated Press. The move appeared to be building after he met with the team Wednesday. Sherman declined to comment after the meeting. Sherman was an overlooked fifth-round draft pick who developed into one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks.
UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to trade wide receiver Torrey Smith to the Carolina Panthers for cornerback Daryl Worley. That’s according to two people familiar with the deal. The trade won’t be officially announced until the NFL’s league year opens next Wednesday. Smith had 36 catches for 430 yards and two touchdowns while starting 14 games in his first season in Philadelphia.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who appeared in six games last season. He is 35 years old and has played 13 seasons in the NFL. He returns on a one-year contract. Fitzpatrick started three games while filling in for injured Jameis Winston in 2017. He completed 96 of163 passes for 1,103 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has agreed to a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers and will report to big league spring training. Detroit’s move adds depth behind James McCann and John Hicks. Saltalamacchia has hit .233 with 110 homers and 381 RBIs over an 11-year big league career. He played in 10 games last season for Toronto and had one hit in 25 at-bats.
