Dow Slips 13 in Early Trading

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are lower in light trading. The Dow Jones industrial average is down 13 points in today’s early going. Decliners on the New York Stock Exchange hold a 2-1 lead over advancers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index has lost six points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index is down one point.

Declines in overseas markets are putting early pressure on Wall Street stocks.

Asian markets were sharply lower as investors were unimpressed with the latest show of support from the international community for Japan’s economic troubles.

Earnings news should again prove prominent in today’s session.

Ford, Apple, Sprint and Digital Equipment all have reported better-than-expected first-quarter results.

But Merck, a member of the Dow Jones industrial average, came out with results that fell just shy of expectations. It blamed the strong dollar.
