Thunderbirds rout Dust Devils 18-0: Lizarraga, Villalobos each record hat tricks against River Valley
BULLHEAD CITY — Elena Rodriguez scored two goals to lead the Lady T-birds over the their crosstown rival River Valley High School Lady Dust Devils 4-2 at Mohave High School in a girls soccer game on Wednesday evening.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Grand Canyon Region T-birds improved their record to 5-1-1 overall this season, according to MaxPreps. The AIA 3A Northwest Region Dust Devils’ record is 3-5 overall, 1-0 in region.
Rodriguez beat Dust Devils keeper Melissa Woodruff low, far to the right side from 25 yards straightaway during the fifth minute to put the T-birds ahead 1-0.
Kaity Read’s penalty kick hit Mohave keeper Misty Ortiz on the upper right side of her body before bouncing into the net to tie it at 1-1 during the 20th minute.
Dust Devils head coach Ed Marquez said Read has a really strong leg and good placement on the penalty kicks.
“She has a lot of power on that shot,” he said.
Mikayla Barton’s goal from five yards to the left of Woodruff beat the River Valley keeper low to the short side, which made it 2-1 during the 36th minute.
Rodriguez beat Woodruff low to the far post from 35 yards to make it 3-1 during the 52nd minute.
“We needed it bad because the girls were starting to get down on themselves,” said T-birds head coach Kelly Burgess about Rodriguez’s second goal. “They were working so hard, possessing the ball well, taking a few shots, but they just weren’t going in the net.
“We needed that to create and little spark and get a little excitement.”
Brisa Muniz lofted a shot from 45 shots, straightaway, which barely got past Mohave backup keeper Megan Krall, which made it 3-2 during the 65th minute.
“That was a beautiful shot — absolutely,” Burgess said.
Dust Devils head coach Ed Marquez said Muniz has a very strong leg.
“You can tell by how fast she is,” Marquez said. “I think we found her home — she’s super fast.”
Jasmine Gonzaleaz took a pass from Skyler Foster before beating Woodruff from 15 yards to the keeper’s right with a shot that landed high in the top far right corner of the net to make it 4-2 during the 65th minute.
