ODU baseball defeats Herd, 6-3
NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion University used a four-run third inning to defeat Marshall University, 6-3, in a Conference USA baseball game Saturday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Marshall (24-25, 11-14 C-USA) left 11 base runners stranded.
Tucker Linder’s sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning, put Marshall up 2-0.
ODU (31-18, 13-13) chased Marshall starting pitcher Wade Martin after three innings. Martin gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits and walked three.
The Monarchs led 6-2 entering the seventh. Elvis Peralta led off for Marshall with a double to left field and moved up on a ground-out before Rey Pastrana’s sacrifice fly drove in a run.
Peralta went 3 for 5 and scored two runs.
Marshall attempts to salvage a game in the series finale scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Track and field
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Reneese Batson from Marshall captured the Conference USA women’s track and field title in the hammer throw Friday with a distance of 187 feet 7 inches. Hasana Clark took third place (178-9).
Sarah Bever of the Thundering Herd finished first in the 800-meter run of the heptathlon and placed ninth overall.
The meet continued Saturday and concludes Sunday.
