Julian Castro, Democratic presidential candidate, calls Trump a ‘failed leader’ on immigration
Julian Castro called President Trump a failed leader on immigration Sunday, a day after the former housing secretary announced his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
In an interview with CBS Face the Nation, Mr. Castro also called for the Trump administration to stop detaining families requesting asylum.
Hes a failed leader on this issue, and now hes just trying to stoke his political base by bringing up the wall all the time, Mr. Castro said. And its just a failure of leadership all around. I would end this kind of family detention.
Mr. Castro, who led the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama, said he would invest in border security, which would include personnel, technology and comprehensive immigration reform, if elected president.
He announced his campaign Saturday at his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
