FAIRFIELD—

DANBURY 62, STAMFORD 44

The Danbury boys basketball team knew it had an advantage inside size-wise against Stamford coming into the FCIAC quarterfinal matchup.

The No. 3 Hatters used that size disparity all afternoon, dominating the Black Knights in the paint, getting the ball inside to Denali Burton and Jah Joyner and working for second-chance points throughout the game, en route to a 62-44 win.

“The first time we played Stamford, they did a good job taking away Denali (Burton) and tonight we did a better job getting him the ball,” Danbury coach Casey Bock said. “Jah (Joyner) played very well today and both of them did a good job getting second shots. That’s how we need Jah to play going forward.”

Danbury advances to the semifinals Tuesday night at Wilton against the winner of No 7 Warde and No. 2 Wilton.

Burton scored 16 points and Joyner added 13 as No. 6 Stamford had few answers for the two big men.

Javon Hernandez led Danbury with 24 points, going 13-of-14 from the free throw line.

The Hatters went up by nine at halftime, never allowing Stamford back in the contest.

Josh Thervil paced Stamford with 14 points while Jay Jaudon added 12.
