TOTOWA, N.J. (AP) _ Jimmy Thunder tore his left Achilles tendon and will be replaced by Jesse Ferguson in a 10-round heavyweight fight against Andrew Golota Jan. 31 in the Convention Center at Atlantic City, N.J.
Thunder’s injury and his replacement by the 41-year-old Ferguson was announced Thursday by promoter Dino Duva.
The Ferguson-Golota fight will be part of an HBO-televised doubleheader with a 12-round match between Michael Grant and Ahmad Abdin for the vacant NABF heavyweight title. The telecast will begin at 10:30 p.m. EST.
Ferguson (26-17, 16 knockouts) was knocked out in the second round by Riddick Bowe in a bid for the WBA title in 1993. In his last fight, Ferguson, who will be 42 March 20, scored a 10-round decision over Obed Sullivan last Dec. 8.
