President Reagan Orders Federal Disaster Aid for Marshall Islands
WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Reagan on Saturday ordered federal disaster recovery money for the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands to recover from tropical storm Roy, which struck the area Jan. 9.
The president directed that the assistance be made available on the recommendation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will coordinate the recovery program. The agency had surveyed the damage in the wake of the storm.
The money will pay for temporary housing for people whose homes are uninhabitable. There also will be grants for individuals and families, low interest loans to cover uninsured property and business losses, and other programs to supplement recovery efforts by the Marshall Islands’ government.
The president’s action also makes federal funds available, on a cost- sharing basis, for the repair or replacement of public facilities that were damaged as a result of the storm.
