Four Shot Along Parade Route

February 27, 1995

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Gunshots wounded four people and sent Mardi Gras revelers frantically ducking for cover minutes before the first big float in Sunday’s Bacchus parade made its way past thousands of people.

Three of the wounded were bystanders.

``Everyone was like running down, trampling over each other,″ said parade watcher Mark Cruc. ``I was terrified.″

The shootings Sunday night were the result of an ongoing dispute between two groups who encountered each other in the crowd, said police Sgt. Barry Fletcher. One of the gunmen was shot in the chest, police said.

The gunman was listed in serious condition at Charity Hospital. A 27-year-old woman was listed in critical condition with a wound to the back.

A 36-year-old woman who was hit in the left shoulder was listed in stable condition, and a 21-year-old woman hit in the leg was in good condition.

Police arrested Jermaine Shields, 18, of New Orleans and said he would be booked with aggravated battery. A 16-year-old boy was held for questioning.

Two handguns were recovered from the scene, and police said others involved in the shooting got away.
