Staying busy during the holidays: Events to keep children occupied

December 15, 2018

LAUGHLIN — Kids and young adults look forward to the two-week winter break from their studies but 14 days out of school can present a variety of challenges for parents.

Laughlin has several options for working parents and those looking to engage energetic youngsters while they are out of school Dec. 21 through Jan. 7.

The Laughlin Library and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Colorado River Laughlin Unit are both hosting multiple events designed to amuse and entertain. “During the Christmas break we are only closed on Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s,” said Mindy Munro of the Laughlin Library Children’s Department.

The library has multiple events scheduled weekly, such as the Lego Club every Wednesday at 4 p.m.

“The Lego Club is probably one of our most well attended weekly events that we have here at the library,” said Munro. “Last time we did it there were about 25 children who showed up to play with Legos.”

The library has added holiday specific programming.

“This year we are going to have a Graham Cracker Cottage building event for the children on Dec. 21,” Munro said. “We are going to supply all of the items needed for them to build their cottage.”

Historically, more children visit the library after Christmas Day, she said.

“I just think that once Christmas is over and all the presents have been opened, the children run out of things to do,” Munro said. “The library is always a great place to come and spend some time. We have a variety of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa books available for children to read.”

The Laughlin Library is at 2840 Needles Highway and can be contacted at 702-507-4060.

Another option for children during the winter break is the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Colorado River Laughlin unit. The Boys & Girls Club will have full-day events Dec. 26-28 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for kindergartners through high schoolers. The cost is $10 per day or $25 for all three days. If one isn’t a member of the Boys & Girls Club, membership is $10.

Events consist of multiple activities such as science or art projects and organized games or movie-watching.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Colorado River Laughlin Unit is at 1975 Arie Drive. The phone number is 702-299-9223.
