July 26, 2004

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) _ Floodwaters, disease and snakebites killed 58 more people across Bangladesh, officials said Monday, as the death toll reached 285 after a month of monsoon rains and rising river levels in this South Asian delta nation.

The Food and Disaster Management Ministry said the new deaths occurred due to diarrhea, drowning and snakebites, without providing further details.

According to the government’s Health Directorate Control Room, diarrhea has afflicted about 75,000 people since the start of the floods late June and 41 have so far died from the disease. It said more than 2,000 people came down with diarrhea on Sunday.
