Braves Hire Fregosi To Assist GM

November 13, 2000

ATLANTA (AP) _ Former major league manager Jim Fregosi is now a special assistant to Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz.

The Braves said Monday that Fregosi would join the baseball operations department.

``We are delighted to add someone with the rich and varied background that Jim Fregosi brings to our major league scouting staff,″ Schuerholz said. ``We feel he will make a tremendous addition.″

The 58-year-old Fregosi was fired by the Toronto Blue Jays on Oct. 10 after managing the team for two seasons. He had previous stints managing the California Angels, the Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies. His career record is 1,028-1,095.

Fregosi’s Phillies defeated the Braves in the 1993 National League Championship Series before falling in six games to the Blue Jays in the World Series. In 1979, he led the Angels to the AL West title.

Toronto was 167-157 under Fregosi. He took the job with 13 games remaining in the 1999 spring training schedule after Tim Johnson was fired.
