Herd plays for 75 this week

Former Marshall players and coaches lock arms with current players and coaches as they take the field for Marshall's game against Charlotte on Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington.

HUNTINGTON — The Marshall University Thundering Herd took on the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday with the memory of 75 special people on their minds.

The game was a “black out” and played in honor of the 48th anniversary of the plane crash that claimed the lives of 75 Marshall football players, coaches, staff and fans. The coaching staff wore “75″ on their sweatshirts in honor of the victims. Instead of running out of the tunnel like a regular home game, the team walked out, arm-in-arm. Marshall defeated Charlotte 30-13.

The 48th Memorial Fountain Ceremony in remembrance of the tragic day will begin at noon Wednesday, Nov. 14. Leslie Deese Garvis, daughter of Danny Deese, charter coordinator for Southern Airways Flight 932 who perished among the 75, will be the keynote speaker.

Garvis is the founder of the Southern Flight 932 Memorial 75 Facebook page, which gives others a space to talk about the people who were lost in the crash.
