CHICAGO — Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke’s attorneys are closing in on their last witnesses and it’s still not clear whether Van Dyke will take the stand himself to testify about the night he fatally shot Laquan McDonald. Defense attorneys are expected to continue presenting their case when the first-degree murder trial resumes Monday. The white officer shot the black teenager 16 times in October 2014. — CHICAGO VIOLENCE: Police say two men were fatally shot and two others were shot and wounded during a dispute inside a moving car that ended in a rollover crash in downtown Chicago. The shooting and crash happened around midnight Sunday.

— CHICAGO-MAN SLAIN: Police say a 73-year-old man who had been walking his dogs was fatally shot as he was returning to his suburban Chicago apartment. UPCOMING: 130 words.

— PARKING LOT SHOOTING: Authorities say a person fired shots in a northwestern Indiana store parking lot, injuring two people.

— FALL FIRE SAFETY: The Illinois State Fire Marshal is offering tips for a fire-free fall . Fire Marshal Matt Perez says leaves and sticks should be removed from gutters so they don’t fuel house fires.



LAKE FOREST, Ill. — It’s a surprise to many to see the Chicago Bears at 3-1 after a 48-10 win over Tampa Bay. Coach Matt Nagy isn’t one of them, though he views the team as nothing close to a finished product. UPCOMING: 600 words, photos.


The Milwaukee Brewers play the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central title in an unusual tiebreaker game. The winner gets a spot in the division series and home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.
