May 23, 2019

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Officials are planning to upgrade 27 miles of rural gravel roads near Fort Wayne to hard surfaces this year.

Allen County commissioners say about $2 million will be spent on the projects using a chip-and-seal process to give the roads a pavement-like surface.

County highway department director Bill Hartman says the work should be completed by the end of this year’s construction season depending on the weather and the availability of stone supplies.

County leaders say are looking to convert about half of Allen County’s current 186 miles of gravel road to hard surfaces over the next five years.

This year’s projects include upgrades road sections up to 2½ miles long.
