Angry Taxpayer Pays Truck Tax in Pennies
DARIEN, Conn. (AP) _ Raymond Goshea says he’s fed up with high taxes, so to make sure town officials get the point, he paid his dues in about 40 pounds worth of pennies.
″I’m tired of paying taxes up the wazoo,″ said the 32-year-old bus driver who brought $61.78 in pennies to Tax Collector Carolyn Miller. ″No matter where you turn, someone slams something extra on you.″
Miller at first rejected the payment, but said she changed her mind Wednesday.
Tax payment in pennies is ″legal tender and a valid form of payment,″ said state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
But some officials are worried about the precedent.
″I’d hate to see what would happen if everybody started to pay in pennies,″ said Norman Lucas, the town’s administrative officer.
The pennies are partial payment of taxes owed on Goshea’s pickup, the tax office said.
