Soap Box Derby launches ‘Veterans Appreciation Day’ in October

AKRON, Ohio – The International Soap Box Derby is launching the first Veterans Appreciation Day next month at Derby Downs in Akron.

The Soap Box Derby is partnering with Sam’s Club and the R.C. Musson and Katharine M. Musson Charitable Foundation to enable veterans and their friends or family to enjoy the “Thrill of the Hill” on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Veterans can choose an adult or youth Derby car to ride down the 989-foot hill at Derby Downs Track. Lunch, entertainment and activities, including touring the  Derby’s Hall of Fame and Museum, will be available as well. The event is free for veterans and $15 for guests.

“The Soap Box Derby is very excited to honor the service of area veterans at this new event, made possible by working with the R.C. Musson and Katharine M. Musson Charitable Foundation and Sam’s Club,” said Derby President and CEO Mark Gerberich in a news release.

The Musson Foundation has supported several initiatives for veterans at the University of Akron, creating the Musson Veterans Lounge and establishing a scholarship for veterans who have exhausted all other G.I. benefits.

“We are truly excited to help support the inaugural 2018 Soap Box Derby Veterans Appreciation Day” said Musson Foundation Vice President Joe Musson in the release. “This event will help demonstrate the appreciation we have for our veterans in the surrounding community.”

Participant must register prior to the event and sign an online waiver available here. For more information, visit the Soap Box Derby website or call 330-733-8723, ext. 20. Derby Downs is located at 789 Derby Downs Dr. in Ellet.
