Media sales continues to make some hiring noise

January 27, 2019

Media sales continues to evolve, and finding your calling in this industry is where print and digital opportunities meet technology.

Television, radio and advertising agencies all have a hand in getting sales opportunities in front of potential clients, whether print or online, which is why this career has so much potential.

The media sales executive job description provided by www.Campaign.Live.co.uk details what type of work is expected in this field.

Selling advertising space in a variety of communication mediums, including newspapers, magazines, online publications, radio, television, outdoor billboards, and digital screens, are all included.

They can also work in exhibition and conference industries as well as approach potential customers to make sales and work to reach targets. Duties could range from contacting prospective clients, contacting existing clients, explaining pricing costs, working with production teams, attending industry events, and delivering sales reports to management.

So what type of personality is a good fit for media sales?

Bob Mackay, general sales manager with Entercom, said they look for self-motivated people who have high courage and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Entercom’s brands are the stations The Bull 100.3, 95.7 The Spot, Mega 101, MIX 96.5, Sports Radio 610 and CBS Sports Radio 650.

Expect to network because this industry is a place to meet and greet people. Warren Fiihr, Comcast Spotlight, VP/GM Houston, said good candidates are confident, positive, intellectually curious, hardworking, and self-motivated.

Networking key

“Networking and ‘being out there’ in the industry are part of this,” said Fiihr.

In terms of earnings, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the median annual wage in May 2016 for advertising sales was $50,380.

Potential is possible at every level, Fiihr said.

Create your success

“That’s up to you and how successful you are in the role,” he said. “The sky is the limit.”

Don’t miss out on the perks either, Fiihr said, adding that you have the chance to be able to help businesses grow, be creative, work in a dynamic environment and have flexibility.

If you think this might be the job for you, know that all levels of experience are encouraged to apply for media sales positions. TotalJobs.com reported that media sales careers are some of the most competitive around, with entry-level positions garnering hundreds of applications for positions.

“We hire at every level from beginner to experienced veteran, and part of the pay structure is determined by your experience level. Income in the field is generally not capped, which allows sales people unlimited revenue potential,” Mackay said.
