FSU Picked to Finish Fifth in Lacrosse Poll

The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team has been picked fifth overall in the 2019 MASCAC women’s lacrosse preseason poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday evening.

Westfield State University was selected to win the 2019 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s lacrosse championship in a vote of the league’s coaches. The reigning MASCAC Tournament Champions collected seven first place votes for a total of 49 points.

Framingham State followed in second with a total of 42 points, including the remaining first-place ballot. Bridgewater State was picked to finish third with 37 points, while Worcester State was next, registering 31 points after being selected fourth.

Sitting in fifth was Fitchburg State with a total of 24 points, while the Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime Academy were picked sixth after amassing 18 points. Salem State and MCLA rounded out this year’s poll in seventh and eighth place with 16 points and seven points respectively.

The Falcons completed the 2018 season with an 8-9 record, including a 3-4 mark in conference play. Fitchburg State will open its season on the road Tuesday, facing Rivier at 6 p.m.

Baseball team selected to finish 5th

The Fitchburg State baseball team was picked fifth in the 2019 MASCAC baseball preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday afternoon.

Westfield State, the reigning MASCAC regular season and postseason tournament champion, was the MASCAC preseason favorite to repeat after collecting six first place ballots for a total of 47 points to outdistance second place Salem State’s total of 38 points, which included the final first-place ballot.

Tying for the third slot were Framingham State and Mass. Maritime with 32 points apiece, while Fitchburg State landed in the fifth spot with a total of 26 points. Worcester State was next, placing sixth after claiming 21 points.

The Trailblazers of MCLA followed in seventh with 19 points, while Bridgewater State rounded out this year’s poll in the eighth sport with a total of nine points.

The Falcons went 13-17-2 last season and 6-7-1 in MASCAC contests. The team is slated to open the 2019 season on March 2 at Salve Regina.
