Boston Consulting Group Is Named Top Leader of Organization Strategy Consulting Worldwide

December 17, 2018

BOSTON, Dec. 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ALM Intelligence has named Boston Consulting Group (BCG) the top leader in organization strategy worldwide for the second year in a row. The latest edition of The ALM Vanguard of organization strategy consulting providers, an annual capabilities assessment of the world’s major consultancies, found BCG to be number one in depth of capabilities—its ability to get results—as well as in delivering the highest impact for its clients in their organization design efforts.

The top-ranked tier of consultancies in the study, designated as ALM Vanguard leaders, not only generate the greatest impact for their clients, but also excel in their ability to carry out a broad array of projects across the full range of client contexts.

BCG captured the highest composite performance ranking of the 30 firms featured in the study. It won the highest rating (“very strong”) in four of the nine provider capabilities (external market insight, strategy, management system, and enabling tools) and the next-highest rating (“strong”) in the remaining five categories (needs assessment, internal client insight, operating system, project management, and client capability development).

New ways of working, such as agile, play a critical role in boosting performance,” says Andrew Toma, a senior partner and the global leader of organization design and support functions at BCG. “So taking a fresh, and deeper, look at organization design—beyond just structural change—is especially helpful for executives.” Organization redesign is, Toma adds, “a powerful tool for changing the trajectory of a business,” particularly in today’s environment of intensifying competition, shifting business models, and complex technologies.

Smart Design for Performance

According to the report, “The beauty of BCG’s approach is its ability to support strategic and holistic organization redesign projects of any size, scope, and scale, as well as across a broad range of cultures.” BCG’s Smart Design for Performance, a holistic approach to driving behavioral change, is an effective way for companies to rethink reorganization in today’s environment.

As the report explains, BCG’s “nuanced, inside-out perspective on how the organizational context determines behaviors” makes its model “particularly responsive to new and emerging forces that require organizations to change not only how they create value, but also [their] ways of working.” Smart Design for Performance is grounded in the firm’s dedication to enabling clients—equipping them with actions and strategies for modeling behaviors that help accelerate and embed change in sustainable ways.

Indeed, as Kevin Kelley, a BCG partner and software and data product leader for the firm’s People & Organization practice, observes, “Driving behavioral change at scale requires a broader and deeper reorganization. And as the scope of reorganization has grown, developing structure and talent solutions and implementing the associated reorganizations have become more complex. Organizational design and data management tools and capabilities that are distributed are critical for avoiding the common pitfalls and for ensuring that firms achieve their objectives in these difficult projects.”

Best-in-Class Enabling Tools, Such as OrgBuilder

BCG was also ranked best in class for its enabling tools, described as “a comprehensive portfolio of digital and analytic assets that bring precision to diagnostics, solutions design, and impact measurement.” Prominent among them is OrgBuilder, the firm’s patented software platform that provides end-to-end reorganization support. OrgBuilder, the report noted, “stands out for providing clients with a single source of truth for tracking project performance and facilitating change management.”

OrgBuilder features diagnostic analyses, provides dashboards and reports, and facilitates a company’s ability to pick the right talent for the right roles. As Kelley points out, OrgBuilder is unique in three ways: it allows many concurrent users, it can handle scale and data volumes, and it can be configured and customized to each client’s specific circumstances and needs. “OrgBuilder is not just a software tool but an enabling capability, supported by years of expertise, dozens of experts across regions, and skilled delivery resources to ensure client success throughout the end-to-end reorganization process.”
