Committee calls for removal of Vermont dam deemed hazard
RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — Officials in Rutland say the Dunklee Pond dam is a public safety hazard and should be removed.
The Public Safety Committee’s decision Monday now goes to the full Board of Aldermen for ratification next week, and is the first step toward taking the dam down. The Rutland Herald reports the dam was built in the 1880s to create a pond for an ice-harvesting business.
City officials now say the dam is one bad rainstorm away from complete failure. The dam also suffers from massive sediment buildup.
Mayor David Allaire said Wednesday it was too early for a clear timetable on the dam’s removal.
