Rockford man guilty but mentally ill in death
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Jurors in Rockford have found a man guilty but mentally ill in his mother’s 2009 shooting death.
The verdict was reached Thursday against Franklin T. Byrd, who faced multiple counts of first-degree murder. Jurors started deliberating Wednesday evening. Authorities have said Byrd killed his 42-year-old mother Leslie Byrd at their home. The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/1a3vto9) the woman was found with a dozen gunshot wounds and her abdomen was cut with a knife after she was already dead.
Byrd’s public defender, Margie O’Connor, said his paranoid mind was convinced his mother was trying to hurt him. O’Connor said Byrd was increasingly isolated and disturbed in the days before the slaying.
