CINCINNATI (AP) _ George Scherger, a former Cincinnati Reds’ baseball coach and minor league manager, is coming out of retirement to manage the Nashville Sounds, the Reds’ Class AAA minor league team, the Reds announced Monday.
Scherger, who will join the team later in the week, replaces Jack Lind, who has managed the Sounds the past three seasons. His record this year was 38-39, the Reds said.
Jim Hoff, minor league field coordinator, will be acting manager until Scherger reports, according to Branch Rickey, director of minor leagues for the Reds and George Schmittou, president and general manager of the Sounds.
Scherger was either a major league coach or minor league manager for the Reds from 1967-86, when he retired.
He managed Nashville in 1979 when the team won the Southern League championship. The team was a Class AA farm team at the time.
Lind managed in the Reds’ farm system for five years, three in AAA.
