Midway opens, 80th Western Michigan Fair in full swing
T.J Schmidt and Company were hard at work setting up the midway Monday at the Mason County Fairgrounds before the 80th Western Michigan Fair officially opens at 3 p.m. today.
“I like (the Western Michigan fair) because of the people,” said P.J. “Numbs” Payne as he worked on assembling Umbrella Cars. He has been in the business for 13 years and five with T.J Schmidt and Company.
William Price, a third-generation carnival worker, has been working for more than 20 years.
“I could never do an office job,” he said, “Here, you never know what’s going to happen each day.”
This year’s midway features classic favorites like the Ferris Wheel, Scooter — more commonly known as “bumper cars” — and a carousel.
There is a plethora of rides for children too. They can go for a spin in Honey Pots, take a ride in Slime Bucket, slide down Fun Slide or try Hang Ten.
Those more adventurous can try Zipper or Wipeout, two of the more fast-paced rides.
