Point of Interest: Matt Blumenthal a marquee name at old cinema
990 Hope St.: The largest political lawn sign in a city awash in them isn’t a lawn sign at all, but the marquee of the now-closed State Cinema, which has told voters “Matt Blumenthal for State Rep” in recent weeks. Blumenthal, a Democrat, might have out-signed his opponent for the 147th district, the GOP’s Anzelmo Graziosi, who doesn’t appear to have a sign of that magnitude. A quick tour of the city only turned up one sign of similar proportions, a truck’s trailer brandishing the name of incumbent Dan Fox, whose facing the GOP’s Philip Balestriere for the 148th. The State Cinema, closed after Labor Day weekend due to mounting losses, is owned by Democratic Board of Finance member Richard Freedman. Freedman has said he has no plans of converting the old cinema into anything that will call for the demolition or demarcation of the main auditorium.
