Three Killed in Avalanches in Alto Adige
BOLZANO, Italy (AP) _ Avalanches in the Italian Alps killed three people and stranded others over the weekend, authorities said Sunday.
Bernhard Woerndle, 22, was buried by a snowslide Saturday while cross- country skiing in the Gardena Pass north of Bolzano, civil defense officials said.
Sunday morning, authorities found the bodies of school teachers Helmuth Poeder, 46, and Herbert Egger, 39, swept away by an avalanche in the Funes Valley in Italy’s Alto Adige region.
Four skiers were stranded by a third avalanche in the region, but were rescued, officials said.
Authorities issued warnings against high-altitude skiing, saying conditions were ripe for avalanches following days of heavy snow.
