Sugar Land Boy Scout saves life of 87-year-old neighbor

March 20, 2019

A 14-year-old is being recognized for his heroic efforts after saving the life of his 87-year-old neighbor who had fallen in her yard and wasn’t able to move.

Ben Davis, who was 13 years old at the time, was playing basketball outside his home on July 2, 2018, when he heard what sounded like faint cries, according to a Great Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network news release.

Davis listened closely, followed the sound and found his elderly neighbor on the ground where she had fallen in her yard and had been unable to move for several hours. The woman had been lying in the hot sun in about 90-degree weather.

Davis acted fast and rushed into her home to call 9-1-1, according to the release. Davis stayed with the woman until emergency responders arrived.

The city of Sugar Land and the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network honored Davis calling him a 9-1-1 Kid Hero at a recent city council meeting.

Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman presented a proclamation dedicated to Davis “for his bravery and quick thinking,” the release said.

Davis is also a Boy Scout and was recently awarded the Boy Scouts National Meritorious Action Award for Lifesaving.
