URGENT Three Die In Collision of Two Aircraft

April 14, 1986

HOLLISTON, Mass. (AP) _ A helicopter and a small airplane collided today over this community, and all three people aboard the helicopter were killed, police said.

The helicopter crashed near a school and the plane went down in a marsh, but no one on the ground was hurt, said witnesses and Patrolman Norman Gillen. It was not immediately known how many people were aboard the plane and whether they were hurt.

″The plane went one way, the rotor went another and the helicopter fell right out of the sky,″ said Bernie Doherty, a witness. He said that as the rotor fell to the ground ″it kept spinning like a top″ until it landed in one resident’s swimming pool.

Eugene Hartnett said he was in his yard when the helicopter crashed to the ground about 40 feet away.

″It all happened in a couple of seconds ... it went over our heads and down. There was a noise. I ducked under the door of the garage,″ he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was sending investigators to the scene.
