L.P. girls hoops closes regular season with win
La Porte’s girls basketball team rebounded after losing to East Chicago Central, downing South Bend Adams 52-30 on the road on Saturday night. Riley Ott earned 26 points and 12 steals for the Slicers (15-7), and Ryin Ott had another double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Kayla Jones recorded seven points and three steals. La Porte led 23-16 at half and outscored the Eagles 21-9 in the fourth quarter.
Blazers girls hoops wins 20 games again
Marquette’s girls basketball team secured its fourth straight 20-win season after routing Lighthouse CPA 73-37 on the road on Saturday afternoon. Sophia Nolan guided the Blazers (20-2) with 22 points, and Emma Nolan was right behind with 21 points. Emmery Joseph matched a season high with 10 assists.
Winamac edges Marquette boys hoops
If Saturday’s matchup is any indication, the possible sectional rematch should be a dandy. Winamac (12-3), which hosts the Class 2A sectional that includes Marquette, nipped the visiting Blazers 57-55. Dayn Staab topped Marquette (10-5) with 14 points, one more than Karsen Grott. Both connected on three 3s. Leading scorer Colin Kenney was held to nine points and Joe Andershock notched eight.
NP boys third in NIC swim meet
The New Prairie boys swimming and diving team finished third in Saturday’s Northern Indiana Conference Championships with 293.5 points at South Bend Riley. Penn won with 555.5, followed by Riley (393.5). The Cougars’ 200-yard freestyle relay of Mason Young, Chase Brackeen, Roman Piergalski and Dalton Thomas finished third (1:33.87). Thomas took sixth in the 50 free, followed by Young and Brackeen. Young and Thomas also went seven-eight in the 100 free. Nolan Szymanski placed fourth in diving with 348.05 points. Wrigley Hemphill and Tommy Eggleston picked up fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.
Westville girls lose to Morgan, top Argos
Morgan Township topped Westville 54-48 in girls basketball Friday, taking advantage of South Central’s loss to LaCrosse to claim the Porter County Conference round-robin title. Sarah Weston had 17 points and four assists for the Blackhawks (12-8, 3-4 PCC). Peyton Rodgers notched 10 points and Nicole Albers snagged nine rebounds.
On Saturday, Westville used a 19-9 fourth quarter to rally past Argos 39-34. Albers racked up 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Blackhawks (13-8). She made 6-of-8 shots, 2-of-3 threes and 7-of-8 free throws.
LaCrosse boys hoops win again
Kaleb Frazier scored 21 points and Hayden McDougal chipped in 16 to lead LaCrosse to a 64-45 boys basketball victory over Hammond Academy on Saturday.
MC girls hoops pummel Hammond Morton
Led by 23 points from Xavier commit Hannah Noveroske, Michigan City’s girls hoops team capped their regular season schedule off with an 82-14 demolition of Hammond Morton on Saturday afternoon at home. De’Naya Hall added 11, while Janicia Anderson and Trinity Thompson both contributed with 10 points each.
Knox bounces NP girls hoops
Sydney Meyers scored 14 points and Taylor Nelson added 11 but the New Prairie girls basketball team fell 77-38 to Knox on Saturday in its regular-season finale.
Argos smothers Westville boys hoops
The offense didn’t show up for Westville on Friday in a 58-24 boys basketball loss to Argos. Josh DeChantal managed 10 points for the Blackhawks (5-8, 2-3 PCC), who shot 25 percent.
Glenn girls hoops rolls, earns piece of NIC South
John Glenn’s girls basketball team drubbed South Bend Washington 61-29 on the road on Saturday. The Falcons (13-9, 7-5 Northern Indiana Conference) earned a share of the NIC South Division with Bremen and Marian. Glenn’s Bethany Hayden tallied 18 points, and Dessa Lang had 12 points. Glenn outscored the Panthers 19-2 in the third quarter.
La Porte athletic events re-scheduled
La Porte High School has announced a number of schedule changes. There will be no JV boys basketball game Saturday vs. Oregon-Davis. The varsity game tips at 1 p.m. in La Porte. The home boys swim meet with Valparaiso will be at 5:30 on Monday. The home freshman girls basketball game versus Valpo will be made up at 6 on Monday. The freshman boys basketball game at Valpo has been moved to 6 p.m. on Feb. 7.
LP girls hoops sectional tickets on sale
Tickets for the Class 4A Mishawaka girls basketball sectional are on sale in the La Porte High School athletic office. Only all session tickets are available in advance for $10. Single session tickets have to be purchased at the gate. The Slicers will open at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 against the Mishawaka vs. South Bend Riley winner.
Blazers boys basketball schedule changes
Marquette and Illiana Christian will make up their boys basketball game on Feb. 14 in a tripleheader at the Scholl Center beginning at 4:30 p.m. The two teams were originally scheduled to play on Wednesday, but inclement weather forced the postponement. The C-Team contest will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity tilt slated for 5:30 p.m. The varsity game will tip-off at about 7 p.m. Additionally, the Blazers’ Saturday, Feb. 2, game at East Chicago Central has been moved up from a 5:30 p.m./7 p.m. JV-varsity doubleheader to a noon/1:30 p.m. twin bill.
