Accam scores early; Chicago beats 10-man NYCFC 1-0

April 25, 2015

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) — David Accam scored his first MLS goal and the Chicago Fire beat 10-man New York City FC 1-0 on Friday night.

Chicago (3-3-0) won its third straight game, while NYCFC (1-4-3) had its winless streak reach six.

Accam, an offseason signing, capitalized on a defensive mistake in the 20th minute. NYCFC backup goalkeeper Ryan Meara came out of his area to prevent the ball from going out of bounds, but he mishandled it and Accam dribbled back to an empty net.

“David is an exciting player, and when we saw him it was like ‘Wow, he could be available and let’s go after him’, and we did,” Chicago coach Frank Yallop said. “He’s excited to be here and I thought he played fantastic tonight and I still think there is more in him.”

Accam put pressure on NYCFC’s defense for most of the game. He was taken down from behind on a breakaway in the 23rd minute, which sent Andrew Jacobson off the field with a red card. He also curled a shot off the post in the first half and forced quality saves by Meara in the 63rd and 83rd minutes.

Meara started in place of Josh Saunders who was suspended one game Thursday for a high foot against Portland.

Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson earned his second shutout of the season in the Fire’s first game since April 4.

“The coaches did a good job on keeping us sharp,” Chicago’s Harry Shipp said. “We had two intrasquad scrimmages, and we really worked on keeping our fitness up the past three weeks. Guys were fitter now than they were our last game, so I think that was good.”
