Popular spot to view Mississippi River reopens in Vicksburg
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — An overlook with an expansive view of the Mississippi River is reopening.
Navy Circle is just off Interstate 20 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. It is among the Civil War battle sites that are part of the Vicksburg National Military Park.
The circle was closed to traffic last November because the Vicksburg Bridge Commission was doing work to stop erosion near a bridge. After that was finished, a new pedestrian fence was installed along the Navy Circle overlook.
The military park announced Thursday that the circle is now open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The circle was the southern anchor of the Union siege lines in the city. It offers a wide view of the river and two bridges crossing it between Mississippi and Louisiana.
