Boy, 9, Killed in Kan. School Bus Crash
SHIELDS, Kan. (AP) _ A tractor-trailer carrying sand collided with a school bus in western Kansas Wednesday, killing a young boy and seriously injuring three other students, police said.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ron Knoefel said Joey Speerm, 9, died. Three other students _ an 8th-grade girl, 5th-grade boy and a 4th-grade girl _ were airlifted to Wichita with serious to critical injuries, he said.
A fifth student and both drivers suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and remained at area hospitals, he said.
Police said the bus driver, after dropping off several students, failed to yield at an intersection. In the collision, the body of the bus was ripped from the vehicle’s frame.
Police were still investigating at the scene in Lane County, about 180 miles northwest of Wichita, late Wednesday.
