Luther Prep defeats Winnebago Lutheran for fourth straight win

May 5, 2019

Junior forward Hannah Schroeder scored an unassisted goal in each half as the Luther Prep girls soccer team beat Winnebago Lutheran Academy 4-2 in a nonconference game at Grinwald Park on Friday for the team’s fourth victory in a row.

Senior forward Abbie Burke opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Schroeder gave the Phoenix a 2-goal lead in the 36th minute.

“I was worried a little about starting flat since we played (Thursday),” Luther Prep girls soccer coach Brent Archer said. “It was a back-and-forth battle to begin. We started to dominate although we had our spots where we let a few slip.”

Winnebago’s Mary Zunker netted a goal in the 38th minute and the Phoenix (5-2-1) held a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Schroeder scored again in the 73rd minute and Megan Tauscheck connected six minutes later to make it 4-1.

Tauscheck’s goal in the 80th minute came on a second-chance opportunity.

“We had moved some players around,” Archer said. “Abbie was on the wing and Megan was at forward. Abbie had a pressure on the defender and we had an outside defender making a run and Megan making a run. A very dynamic attack. That turned out to get a nice thru ball right to Megan, she cleaned up the second shot.”

Luther Prep goalie Carly Hirsch stopped six shots.

“It was a very good game,” Archer said. “The offensive strategies we’ve been working at in practice are coming together ... It was a good team offensive strike, better than I’ve seen all year from us.”

Luther Prep hosts Fort Atkinson in a nonconference game on Monday at 4:30 p.m. likely to be played at Grinwald Park.
