Police Chief Investigating Mafia Slain
PALERMO, Sicily (AP) _ Gunmen on Tuesday shot and killed the chief of Palermo’s homicide squad, a key figure in anti-Mafia operations and the second ranking policeman to be killed in 10 days, authorities reported.
They said three men armed with shotguns and revolvers shot Antonino Cassara, 38, as he left his car to go to his apartment.
One of his bodyguards, Roberto D’Antiochia, also was killed and a second bodyguard was wounded.
The attack followed the July 28 killing of police official Giuseppe Montana, 35, at a fishing village 9 miles outside Palermo.
Officials said Cassara was heading investigations into the murder of Montana, who ran a special squad to track down Mafia fugitives.
