CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Dom Capers has been offered a contract to become the first coach of the Carolina Panthers, but he won’t sign on with the expansion team until Monday.
Karen Capers, the wife of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive coordinator, told The Gaston Gazette that her husband will sign the contract Monday morning before being named to the post at an afternoon news conference.
Team president Mike McCormack acknowledged Friday that the Panthers made a contract offer to Capers.
``We’ve talked with Dom, and things are now in the hands of his attorney,″ McCormack said. ``But we will not make any announcement until we hold a press conference.″
The Panthers were allowed to sign Capers once a moratorium imposed by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue passed at 6 p.m. Friday.
The Panthers are expected to begin filling out the remainder of their coaching staff next week. The team has already hired offensive line coach Jim McNally and wide receivers coach Richard Williamson.
Capers’ hiring has not come without cost. Tagliabue fined the Panthers $150,000 and stripped them of two supplemental draft picks for contacting Capers prior to the completion of the Steelers’ season.
