Two Navy Recruiters Shot By Gunman
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) _ A man walked into a U.S. Navy recruiting station Wednesday and shot and wounded two recruiters, one critically, before fleeing, authorities said.
The gunman said nothing as he walked into the office at a shopping center about 12:40 p.m. and shot the recruiters as they sat in their cubicles, said Richmond County Sheriff’s Maj. Ronald Strength.
Nathaniel Obey, 29, of Augusta suffered a chest wound and was in critical condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Christine Deriso. Mark Watson, 24, of Hephzibah was in fair condition with a hip wound.
Both men are Navy petty officers, said Lt. Cmdr. Catherine Cummings of the Navy recruiting district office in Columbia, S.C.
The gunman apparently ran away. He appeared to be a foreigner, Strength said without elaborating.
Authorities were questioning a third recruiter on duty when the shooting occurred, but would provide no other details of their investigation.
