Bilbao wins 1-0 at Shakhtar in Champions League
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Athletic Bilbao beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday after the group’s other result had already put the Ukrainian team through to the knockout stage.
Bilbao neutralized a Shakhtar attack that had scored 12 goals in the previous two group games before center back Mikel San Jose scored the winner from close range in the 68th minute. San Jose side-footed the ball in at close range from Benat Etxebarria’s free kick.
Earlier, Porto’s 3-0 victory at BATE Borisov ensured Shakhtar would advance.
Porto has 13 points and is guaranteed to finish first in Group H after Shakhtar was left on eight points.
Bilbao’s first win in the group left it on four points, while BATE has three. The two will play in the final round with a Europa League berth as the prize for the third-place finisher.
Shakhtar played a sluggish home match in Lviv as political instability in Ukraine meant it once again couldn’t use its home stadium.
Bilbao goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz saved Douglas Costa’s shot in the 48th minute while at the other end Andriy Pyyatov saved a free kick taken by Bilbao’s Etxebarria four minutes later.
Shakhtar was unlucky not to get a penalty after Mikel Balenziaga diverted a shot with his arm inside the area in the 90th.
