Musketeers, Vikings open with wins

LLOYD, Ky. — Greenup County rallied from a 7-0 deficit after one quarter to defeat Russell, 41-21, Saturday night in high school football.

The Musketeers’ victory was the second in a row over the Red Devils, the first time in the history of the rivalry that has happened.

After Malakai Anderson gave Russell the early lead, Dalton Halstead scored on a pair of 1-yard runs to give Greenup County a lead it never relinquished. In the third quarter, Eli Sammons threw a 56-yard TD pass to Patrick Kelly and Trey Collier’s extra point made it 21-7. Sammons and Kelly connected again from 64 yards to give the Musketeers a 28-7 lead.

Landon Duval ran 22 yards for a score to pull Russell with 28-14, but 2:56 later Austin Evans countered with a 56-yard touchdown sprint to make it 35-14. Halstead’s 66-yard scoring run boosted the lead to 41-14. Ethan Sharp scored on a 7-yard run with 2:23 remaining and Gabe Floyd’s extra point set the score.

Greenup County rushed for 325 yards and passed for 166, compared to Russell’s 190 on the ground and 57 in the air. Halstead carried 24 times for 177 yards.

SYMMES VALLEY 14, SOUTH GALLIA 12: The Vikings edged the Rebels Saturday in Willow Wood, Ohio, despite being outgained 351-95 in the opener for both teams.

Nick Stroud capped Symmes Valley’s initial drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Josh Ferguson caused a fumble, scooped up the loose ball and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. Kiefer Wilson’s pass to Ryan Lewis for a two-point conversion made it 14-0.

South Gallia pulled within 14-6 when Kyle Northup, who rushed for a team-high 121 yards, scored on a 4-yard run 30 seconds before halftime. The Rebels scored again late in the third quarter on a run by Johnny Sheets, who rushed for 116 yards total. The conversion failed, setting the score.

South Gallia had the ball for 34:20 to Symmes Valley’s 14:40 and committed two turnovers to the Vikings’ five, while running 53 plays to 30, but couldn’t secure the victory.

Symmes Valley had two TDs nullified by penalties.

Jack Leith made five solo tackles and nine assists, caused a fumble and blocked a punt for the Vikings. Ferguson caused to fumbles and recovered both.

“We’re young and it showed,” Symmes Valley coach Rusty Webb said. “But our kids played hard.”

The Vikings return to action at 7 p.m. Friday vs, Fairfield Christian Academy at Millersport High School. The Rebels are at home to Waterford at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
