Chana Wins WBA 105-Pound Title
YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) _ Chana Porpaoin of Thailand captured the WBA’s 105-pound title Monday, winning a split decision over defending champion Keitaro Hoshino of Japan.
Hoshino was making the first defense of the title he won from Joma Gamboa of the Philippines in December.
American judges Duane Ford and Oscar Pereze scored it 115-113 for Chana. South Korean Yuh Wansoo had it 118-110 for Hoshino.
Chana has a record of 44-1-2, including 16 knockouts. Hoshino dropped to 21-7, with five knockouts.
Both fighters weighed 105 pounds. There were no knockdowns in the 12-round bout.
The 35-year Thai challenger attacked with left and right hooks and sharp uppercuts before a crowd of 4,000 at the Pacifico Yokohama National Convention Hall.
In the third round, Chana landed a series of left and right hooks to Hoshino’s face, punishing the 31-year-old Japanese in the early rounds.
Chana defended the minimum weight title eight times before losing it in 1995.
``I am glad to win the title again,″ he said. ``I fought hard for the Thai people.″
