Birding festival takes flight

May 6, 2019

POCATELLO - The American Falls Family Bird Festival celebrates the incredible variety of bird species that visit the premier birding areas near American Falls.

The 2019 Festival will take place on Saturday, May 18 with guided birding and a no-host lunch.

The festival offers birding adventures and activities for the whole family with birding excitement for both kids and grownups. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy spring and experience the pleasure of living in Idaho.

In 2013 a small group of local birding enthusiasts met to consider the idea of a family birding festival in American Falls. The importance of the area as a gathering place for birds was realized when the American Falls reservoir was designated as one of 64 Important Bird Areas in Idaho. It is also part of the Idaho State Birding Trail.

In six years, the festival has grown to include an array of guided walks to suit birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts of every age and level of expertise. The walks are led by knowledgeable birders and include outings to Massacre Rocks State Park, the American Falls fish hatchery and the American Falls Marina, depending on the weather.

Everyone is invited to the free festival with registration at 9:00 a.m. at the American Falls public library.
