Jerry Dipoto To Stay With Rockies

November 2, 1999

DENVER (AP) _ Jerry Dipoto, one of only three Colorado pitchers to have an ERA under 5.00 last season, agreed to a $4.9 million, two-year contract with the Rockies.

Colorado negotiated the new deal after declining a $4 million option and electing to give the 31-year-old right-hander a $500,000 buyout.

``I wanted to stay,″ Dipoto said. ``I had no desire to file for free agency once they made the decision they wanted me to stay.″

Dipoto gets a $200,000 signing bonus and salaries of $2.25 million in each of the next two seasons. The Rockies have a $2.7 million option for 2002 with a $200,000 buyout.

Dipoto was 4-5 with a 4.26 ERA and one save last season. He worked primarily as a setup man in the late innings and allowed an NL-low 12.5 percent of inherited runners to score.

Dipoto has made 205 appearances in his three years with the Rockies, who acquired him from the New York Mets in a 1997 trade for Armando Reynoso.
