November 29, 1998

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Chamique Holdsclaw scored 18 points and Tamika Catchings added 17 to lead No. 3 Tennessee past Texas 86-65 Saturday night.

The three-time defending national champion Lady Vols (3-1) have won 11 straight in the series between two of the most storied programs in women’s basketball.

Texas (1-3) was the first team to go undefeated and win a national title (1986), a feat Tennessee accomplished last year.

Texas has lost nine of its last 10 games against ranked opponents. It was Tennessee’s first game since a Nov. 16 victory over St. Joseph.

Texas kept pace with the more athletic Lady Vols for the first 7 minutes and took its last lead at 16-14 with 13:43 left in the first half. But Tennessee responded with a 13-0 run to take a 27-16 lead with at 9:34 left. Freshman center Michelle Snow led the spurt with six points.

Tennessee used a pressing defense to harass Texas into 18 first half turnovers. The Vols also sent Texas’ biggest player, 6-foot-4 center Rashunda Johnson, to the bench early with four fouls in the first half.

Texas also lost Johnson’s backup, 6-4 Carla Littleton, with a sprained knee in the first half.

Tennessee shot 57.6 percent in the first half to take a 49-25 lead into halftime. The Lady Vols twice built their lead to 30 points in the second half.

Texas cut Tennessee’s lead to under 20 late in the game but got no closer than 79-63 with 1:37 left.

Kim Lummus led Texas with a career-high 26 points behind 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range but committed seven of Texas’ 27 turnovers.
