Somerset Township couple charged with distributing meth
A couple has been charged with distributing methamphetamine from their Somerset Township home.
State police were searching Friday for Derek Schardt, who was wanted in several cases involving burglary, theft and arson charges. Police went to the Maust Road home of 33-year-old Amanda Marie Ritz and 34-year-old Nathanael Ritz.
When police arrived at the home, they stopped a man who said he was visiting the couple, police said. When police asked if they could search his car, they found a black lockbox with drug paraphernalia and crystal meth, which the man said he purchased inside the house.
Amanda Ritz answered the door to the home. Police told her that they were there looking for Schardt and that a man had just told them he purchased meth from the home. Police told Ritz that she could give them the meth or they could get a search warrant. According to court documents, Amanda Ritz retrieved a bag of white crystal meth from a flashlight in a bag, and another bag containing meth and marijuana. She also turned over $1,000 in cash from her husband’s wallet.
She told police that she deals and her husband just uses, police said.
Both were charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Each is in the Somerset County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday before District Judge Ken Johnson in Somerset.
Schardt was found Saturday in the Garrett area.
