WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ MaChelle Joseph scored 24 points and had 16 assists to lead No. 11 Purdue over Northern Illinois 98-62 Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Midwest Regional tournament.
Purdue (23-6) plays Maryland (24-5) Thursday in a regional semifinal. Tennessee (28-2) meets Western Kentucky (24-7) in the other semifinal here at Mackey Arena.
Joseph capped a decisive 10-point streak that gave the Boilermakers a 38-29 lead in the first half. The spurt began with a basket by Donna Gill with 3:09 left in the period. Cindy Lamping hit two lay-ins during the streak, which ended with Joseph’s 12-foot jumper with 1:04 left.
Northern Illinois came within five points at 15:33 in the second half after two rebounds and a layin by Cindy Conner, who led Northern with 18 points.
Tina Eddie, who scored 18 points, responded with eight consecutive points and the Boilermakers were never threatened again.
Purdue was on target all day as it made 17 of 29 shots in the first half, and missed only eight of its 29 shots in the second half.
Northern Illinois, meanwhile, made just 12 of 31 attempts in the first half and 15 of 44 in the second.
